When will the contest start?
Applications accepted until close of business, October 31, 2008. The contest will kick-off with an initial weigh-in on Monday, November 10, 2008 and will run for six (6) months.  The contest will end with a final pet weigh-in Monday May 11, 2009.

What is the cost to enter my pet in the contest?
It is FREE to enter the contest. There is no application fee or cost to apply, however, each dog selected to participate in the Healthiest Hound contest will be required to have a physical exam, blood work and Thyroid test by Doc•Side Veterinary Medical Center to ensure they are healthy enough to participate in a weight loss contest.

What are the prizes?
There are 2 prizes:

  1. The dog losing the largest percent of body weight at the final weigh-in will win a one year supply of free Hills Prescription Diet® Prescription food.
  2. The dogs’ owner will win a one year membership to the Canton Health Club in Baltimore.

How will the winner be determined?
At the end of the six months, the dog that loses the largest percentage of weight loss, not greatest number of pounds lost, will be crowned Doc•Side’s Healthiest Hound. Therefore, dogs all have a fair chance to win whether you have  a Great Dane or a Chihuahua

Do I have to be a current Doc•Side client to enter my pet in the competition?
We welcome any overweight dog in the Baltimore area to participate in the contest.  Your dog does not have to be a current patient of Doc•Side Veterinary Medical Center.

How do I enter my dog in the contest?
There are 3 ways to enter your pet in the Healthiest Hound Contest:

  1. You Can Enter On-Line: attach 2 digital photos (1 side view & 1 overhead view) and click submit.
  2. Mail In Your Application:  attach 2 photos (1 side view & 1 overhead view) and mail to: Doc•Side Veterinary Medical Center

  3. In Person: Bring 2 photos (1 side view & 1 overhead view) to Doc•Side , complete an application, attach the photos and give to the Receptionist. 

How will I know if my dog is selected to participate in the contest?

Doc•Side will review all applications received by close of business October 20, 2008 and select six (6) dogs who will compete for the grand prize.  Each contestant’s owner will be notified by phone and receive a written invitation by mail.

What will it cost me to have my dog weighed and examined?

There will be NO CHARGE for participants’ to be weighed and examined twice a month to evaluate their health and progress.

How often do I have to bring my pet in to be weighed?
If selected each contestant will come into Doc•Side on the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month for a physical exam including weigh-ins, measurements and photos weighed and examined twice a month to evaluate their health and progress.

How do I know if my dog is overweight?
To qualify for the contest, dogs must have a Body Condition Score greater than 3 out of 5, or be at least 15% overweight.  Determining if your pet is carrying too many pounds can be tough, so we have placed three tools on the Web site to help you. Click here for these tools.

How many dogs will be selected to compete in the contest?
There will be six (6) dogs selected for the contest.

Will I have to buy special food?
All dogs in the contest will be prescribed the Hills Prescription Diet food that is right for their health and weight loss goals.  We will help you set up a feeding plan for your dog to gradually change over to the new food.  We have Hills food on hand in both dry and canned formulations for your convenience.
